Our History
The Lakes Region has a long history of supporting child care and youth development. In 1973, new mom Sarah Allen started offering child care out of her home. The program evolved into the nonprofit Lakes Region Child Care Services, which grew to encompass three early learning centers and three after school programs in Laconia and Belmont. Meanwhile, in 1998, a teen center was founded by a group of determined community members after 14-year-old Robbie Mills lost his life at the hands of two boys who wanted his bike. Backed by generous Lakes Region residents, the program evolved into a Boys & Girls Club and eventually found a home at the former St. James Church in Laconia. The Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region merged with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Concord in 2015, and in 2019 Lakes Region Child Care Services joined the family. When the principal at Jennie D. Blake Elementary School in Hill reached out in 2021 about the lack of after school care in his students' rural community, the organization agreed to take the program on.
