Our History
The Lakes Region has a long history of supporting child care and youth development. In 1973, new mom Sarah Allen started offering child care out of her home. The program evolved into the nonprofit Lakes Region Child Care Services, which grew to encompass three early learning centers and three after school programs in Laconia and Belmont. Meanwhile, in 1998, a group of determined community members founded a teen center after 14-year-old Robbie Mills lost his life at the hands of two boys who wanted his bike. Backed by generous Lakes Region residents, the program evolved into a Boys & Girls Club and eventually found a home at the former St. James Church in Laconia. In 2015, The Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region merged with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Concord, and in 2019 Lakes Region Child Care Services joined the family. If staffing is available, the Club also runs after school programming at Holderness Central School. The newest location is an early childhood center at the former Gale School in Belmont, which is currently being renovated by Lakes Region Community Developers. When construction is complete, the Club looks forward to opening the Sara M. Allen Early Learning Center to honor the woman who started it all!
