Welcome to North Country Region!

In 2004, a small group of North Country residents became concerned that there was no safe place for children to go to after school. This group was spearheaded by Therese Reger, owner of the Four Seasons Sports Center in Lisbon (now Evergreen Sports Center), Denny Engstrom, Bob Butson, former principal of the Lisbon Regional School, and Bruce and Cindy McLaren. The Club opened at the Four Seasons in mid-February, 2005, with a daily after school program run by volunteers. A formal structure was established consisting of elected officers, directors and standing committees, and soon after the organization joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. A $25,000 U.S. Dept. of Justice start-up grant through the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester allowed the Club to hire its first employee, Bruce McLaren, as Unit Director. Bruce was good friends with World Champion skier Bode Miller, and prevailed on Bode to make a very generous gift to help get the Club going. Soon after they purchased the center and in 2023 merged with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Hampshire.

Meanwhile, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central NH had been working on a project to retrofit classrooms at White Mountains Community College to create a child care center in Berlin. When Great Woods Child Care Center in Gorham closed, the Club temporarily opened a child care center there, while the Berlin site was being completed.

Financial Assistance from the Club

We strongly encourage you to apply for a State of New Hampshire Child Care Scholarship-- it's there to help organizations like us stay in business without passing costs along to you! It's available for children ages six weeks old through age 13. If you don't qualify or are unable to apply for a State of NH Child Care Scholarship, the Boys & Girls Club offers a reduced fee for the after school program and summer camp only, based on family income. To apply for Club assistance, please follow instructions in the after school program enrollment application to upload proof of income. Documentation may include three most recent pay stubs, Social Security benefits, food stamps explanation of benefits, etc. Members will be charged the full fee until proof of income or State enrollment is confirmed.

Financial Assistance from the State of NH

Why not see if the state of New Hampshire will help pay your weekly fee! They have increased their income limits so that more families are covered! To find out more and apply, please visit this site. While you wait for the state scholarship decision, you’re welcome to enroll but must pay the full rate. Once any payments are received from the state and applied to your account, the credits can be used for future fees. If the credit balance exceeds $100 we would be happy to refund your credit card upon request. Please reach out to your site director if you need help with the process.
